Reflection paragraph on process

While doing this project I have learned so much more about cheerleading. I learned about the history of cheerleading, and how it is still improving today. Now when I cheer I take more responsiblitiy than I used to, because what I do might help or hurt others. What I liked the most of this project was the Wordles, because it was intresting to see how they turned out and it was cool how you could change the color and layout. The Animoto, was very intresteing to because I gathered my information into their spaces and it generated the video for me. I liked this project, and i'm glad Mrs. Tyler chose it.

Reflection paragraph on sources

During this project, the sources I used were very helpful. I found everything I wanted to know some were more difficult than others but I found out the information. The most useful website that I used was the South Carolina Discussion Board of Cheerleading. Which is where people in South Carolina, asked questions about cheerleading and/or talked to other people about cheerleading. I believe all of my web pages were trustworthy, and reliable.

Wordle #2 based on topic key terms

Wordle: cheerleading

Reflection paragraph on findings

During this research I found out that the herkie was named after the founder of a big cheerleading organization. What i found most suprising is their cheers from when they first started. I do not have any more questions. Now that I know more about cheerleading I feel more knowledgeable.

Finding paragraph #3

In this section I have been researching the history of competitive cheerleading and how the rules of stunting have improved. The history of competitive cheerleading is young. It's only been introduced in the last forty years that cheerleading has expanded into the major competitions that you see today. The first cheerleaders were called "yell leaders" or were part of a "pep squad". The earliest cheerleading competitions began in the late 1960s. The International Cheerleading Foundation, which is now known as the World Cheerleading Association, began ranking the top ten college cheerleading squads as well as handing out "Cheerleader All America" awards around 1968. However, it wasn't until 1978 when CBS televised the Collegiate Cheerleading Championships that America got its first glimpse of cheerleading that went well beyond chanting and cheering on the sidelines. The rules of stunting has improved by, protection for injuries.

Finding paragraph #2

I have researched the history of cheerleading uniforms. Early Cheerleading started at Princeton University. The first cheerleaders were all men. When females finally did take over cheerleading, they were still in the days of long wool skirts, cardigan sweaters and canvas sneakers. The letters of the school where sewn on the sweater, and girls wore turtlenecks or blouses under their cardigan sweaters. In the 60's they wore long wool skirts, that were more comfortable skirt. The skirts were made of cotton and worn with a crew neck sweater. A design with the letters of the school on a megaphone were somewhere on the sweater along with the squad member's name. Girls still wore a blouse underneath the sweater. In the 70's cheerleading was more athletic. Cheerleaders wore sneakers (saddle shoes or Keds) and the uniform was made less bulky to allow for easier movement. Vests or shell tops and pleated skirts became popular. Pleated skirts were alternating colors, and sometimes they were reversible.

Finding paragraph #1

In my research, I have found the answers to a few of my questions. Pom poms are the decorative handheld streamers that cheerleaders use as visual props. The first pom poms were can be traced back to the 1930s, at that time pom poms were handmade from paper. In 1953, Lawrence Herkimer founded the Cheerleading Supply Company and later started making pompoms. Fred Gastoff invented the first vinyl pompoms in 1965. These pompoms were first used by the International Cheerleading Foundation. Cheerleaders started cheering at different sports about two decades later. They cheered at wrestling, swimming, track, football, and basketball. Then it eventually made it to T.V and attracted watchers.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5

Quote - "Cheerleading was now a recognized force in schools. “Yell leaders” in the 1930's began to use megaphones, drums and noisemakers to heighten the excitement. Then came World War II and men left to fight. Women took over cheerleading and began to dominate the sport. In fact, when Laurence “Herkie” Herkimer founded the spirit industry and organized the first cheerleader camp at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas in 1948, 52 girls attended. The camp taught fundamental cheerleading skills. Throughout the next two decades and into the 70's, the sport branched out to support wrestling, track and swimming, in addition to the well-established football and basketball."

Paraphrase - Cheerleaders were once called "Yell leaders". In the 30's megaphones, drums, and different noise makers were used to help get the crowd excited. Women took over the sport because most men left to go fight in World War II. Laurence Herkimer found the first cheerleading camp in Texas and 52 girls attended. The jump Herkie came from Herkimer. In the 70's cheerleaders started supporting werestling, football, basketball, track, and swimming.

Paraphrase - When someone tries to tell you cheerleading is easy and isn't a sport, tell them to get out in front of huge crowds of people and smile, and do the routine correctly. When they
do that sucessfully then they can come back to you.

What I already know about my topic.

  • Cheerleading is enjoyable but dangerous
  • Always being happy
  • Smiling while cheering
  • Show your spirit (helping the team win)
  • Stunting is very serious & dangerous
  • Sharp & Clean motions are the best
  • Get the crowd involved in chants
  • NO JEWELRY
  • proper uniform, and shoes
  • keep your hair pulled back
  • be loud (say the words)

The story behind my topic choice.

My topic choice is cheerleading. I tried out for cheerleading in eighth grade, and to try out you learned a dance, a cheer, and five types of jumps. When we tried out we had to perform the dance, cheer, and two jumps. I made the cheerleading squad and I cheered at my first football game. Cheering for the first time was a blast; I loved getting the crowd pumped up. Currently, I am in the 11th grade and I still cheer at football and basketball games.
