In my research, I have found the answers to a few of my questions. Pom poms are the decorative handheld streamers that cheerleaders use as visual props. The first pom poms were can be traced back to the 1930s, at that time pom poms were handmade from paper. In 1953, Lawrence Herkimer founded the Cheerleading Supply Company and later started making pompoms. Fred Gastoff invented the first vinyl pompoms in 1965. These pompoms were first used by the International Cheerleading Foundation. Cheerleaders started cheering at different sports about two decades later. They cheered at wrestling, swimming, track, football, and basketball. Then it eventually made it to T.V and attracted watchers.
